The Light that was Lost

A Mythic Journey through the Death of Baldr

We live in a time of great dissolution. The order we’ve known is crumbling rapidly. Families split apart. Bombs rend the sky. And the threat of chaos looms everywhere we look.

And we cannot help but wonder. How do we respond in such uncertain times?

Ours is not the only culture that foresaw its own extinction. Ours is not the first to defy its own fate.

Though is it fate? Is it fate or is it trauma? Is the end truly inevitable—a fate to simply be overcome?
Or is there a pattern here. A pattern we might break if only we truly understood. If only we would look this devastation in the face.

This myth comes from a culture much like ours. A culture rife with war, battle, conflict, and danger.
In this ancient story we might see a reflection of ourselves. Who we are. Where we are. What we might do if we don’t change our direction.

In this story lie the unbreakable chain of events that leads to ultimate destruction.
Though the myth tells us, too, that even chains that are unbreakable will one day come unbound.

Is it fate that hurtles us towards destruction? Or the hubris to deny natural law? The gall to defy even death? Or the betrayal of what we once held dear?

In these eight weeks we will not seek answers to these questions, but wrestle with them as they live in our own hearts and bodies. We won’t place this myth on a whiteboard and break it apart. We won’t seek to apprehend it with the superior function of our logic.

Rather, we will enter this story as a living myth. A story that unfolds all around us even now.
We enter the story not to solve our problems or to answer our questions, but to more fully recognize where we are.

Together, we will discover what it means, what it feels like to live in a world where disturbing prophecy foretells our demise. Where pride and arrogance supercede fear. Where the attempt to avert disaster brings disaster on. And the end if brought about by avoiding its cause.
